Despite the multiple positives from another competitive season in all formats, the elusive County Championship remained out of reach again, an extraordinary batting performance in the last game against Surrey nullified by Warwickshire's victory.

The events of the weekend meant Somerset finished second for the sixth time since 2010. It does start to feel a little bit like whether England men, for all their talent and close shaves, will ever win another major football tournament.
