It's not ideal to have played so well and be on the back end of a heartbreaking one wicket defeat to end the season, women's captain Sophie Luff said with characteristic understatement and clearly hiding her deep disappointment after the game against Surrey at the weekend.
Absolute heartbreak for the women who, with a victory, would have been contesting the eliminator this week for the Metro Bank finals. As it turned out, a near 300 score with record-breaking centuries from Luff and Niamh Holland proved agonisingly short as Surrey scampered to victory at the death with their last pair at the crease.
